The most widely accepted external parasite treatments currently available for pets are Frontline, Advantage, Revolution and Bio-Spot.
These well-known dog and cat flea treatments provide one month of solid protection.
Imidacloprid is the key ingredient in Advantage Flea that works to destroy the flea's nervous system, rendering the flea paralyzed and quickly ending its life.
98 to 100 percent of the fleas die within the first 12 hours of application.
Frontline and Advantage brand flea killers work nearly instantaneously and keep working for a long time.
Your pet should not be a victim of fleas when relief is readily available.
All you need to do is choose the best dog or cat flea medication for your situation.
External parasites that live off of the blood of mammals, reptiles, and birds are often referred to as mites and ticks.
The American dog tick is arguably the best known of the five in North America.
As far as disease transmission to humans goes, ticks come in at a frightening second place to mosquitoes.
Everyone knows that Lyme disease is a tick-borne illness, but ticks also spread Rocky Mountain spotted fever, equine encephalitis, and ehrlichiosis.
They also transmit diseases found in pets and livestock.
Another type of mite living in the Rocky Mountains is the wood tick.
Dog tick treatments include tick collars and dogs' flea/tick shampoos.
For effective tick control, dogs should be checked in tick season (warm weather = more ticks) and if a tick is found, it should be removed entirely.
If you are not careful, part of the tick may be left in the wound, increasing the likelihood of infection.
Unlike diseases passed by ticks, heartworm is transmitted by mosquitoes, and the larva then live in the bloodstream of the animal bitten by the mosquito.
Before becoming adults, the parasites must go through several stages. They enter the blood stream as larvae.
Once adult, the heart worms travel to the heart to live off the blood supply.
Symptoms like coughing and difficulty in breathing may ensue, and the outcome of an untreated heartworm infestation is the heart failure of the host animal.
Effective disease treatments are available for your pet, but only if it is caught early enough.
One treatment available for dogs that also takes care of hookworms and ascarid infections is Interceptor.
Another common infection that your dog may experience is kennel cough.
Dogs are very susceptible to this highly contagious form of bronchitis, hence the name, as it can spread in areas where dogs are kept in close proximity.
Prevention is possible through vaccinating for canine adenovirus, distemper, parainfluenza, and bordetella and the infection itself treated with antibiotics.
