I know that when my dog has diarrhea, I am almost as miserable as she is. Thankfully, it doesnt happen often and can usually be traced back to some cause that I can hope to avoid in the future. Here are some of the major reasons for dog diarrhea:

Change in diet - If you change your dogs food suddenly it could cause diariea. Makes sense doesnt it? Your dog is used to an eating and then all of a sudden a totally different food is in his bowl. His digestive system might need a few days to switch tracks and get used to the new food. Of course you can an avoid this by gradually changing the food - mixing the two together using less of the old food and more and more of the new. This is particularly important with puppies are whose digestive systems are very delicate.

Worms - Dogs, especially puppies, are susceptible to diarrhea caused by worms. Frothy diarrhea often indicates the presence of worms. Take your dog to the vet immediately for treatment.

Stress - Any departure from the normal routine, like a long trip or a new baby in the house, can cause diarrhea.

Virus - Sometimes your dog might have a virus or illness even though its not something that happens as often as it does with people. If you think its possible your dog may have one of these its best to have your veterinarian take a look to determine what treatment is best.

Bad food - Your dog is just like a member of your family. Make sure you take care of your dogs diet as you would a member of your blood relatives, by avoiding spoiled meats.

I know when my dog has diarrhea the most an important thing on my mind is how to make it go away. Not only is it uncomfortable for the dog but it makes a big mess too! While I recommend you get your dog to a vet right away if he has diarrhea here are some things you could try at home:

If the problem was caused by bad food you might try to a bit of caster oil. Sometimes a more drastic effort is requited and you might have to put your pet on a diet of plain rice.

Another option is to give milk mixed with arrowroot for thickness.

Don't be in a big rush to return your dog back to his normal diet. Keep feeding him rice and milk for several days to give his digestive system a chance to recuperate.

Try slowly getting your dog back to his normal food. Mix boiled hamburg or white fish with rice and milk and gradually add in his regular food. Cut back on the regular food if the diarrhea re-appears.

When my dog has diarrhea my first concern is for her health so I always call the Vet right away and you should too. You might have to drag your dog in there for an exam but its better to be safe than sorry. Your vet will only be able to recommend a course of action and give out of the medications after she has seen your dog.

1: Things You Should Know Before Leaving Your Dog With Your Friend
When it comes to the travel times of the year especially during the holidays, leaving your dog with a friend is really the only option that you have because there is usually no one that can keep a watchful eye on the dog in your house for you while you are away. When this happens, your dog will most likely be staying over at a friend's house while during the trip. While this can seem like a fun and exciting experience, in reality for a dog this can prove to be a disaster if the appropriate preparations are not taken care of.

2: How To Stop Dog Jumping Behavior Before Something Bad Happens
Most people subscribe to the idea that dogs jump on humans in order to be closer to them. However, this can be scary if large dogs, even with good intentions, jump on humans. It can cause all kinds of problems and potentially really hurt someone so it is important to know how to stop dog jumping behavior before an accident occurs.

3: We Are Our Dog And Cat's Attorneys
Our dogs and cat's can't afford lawyers so we have to be their advocates. Much has been discussed regarding the B.A.R.F. diet for pets, but still very little research behind it. I happen to know it works as I almost had my 12 year old stray mutt put to sleep in 1996, at age 12, at the veterinarian's suggestion, but decided to research a bit more myself before making such an important decision. He lived another 10 years (to age 22), vet-free, except to the very last six months of his life.

4: Mastering the Commands "Come & No" in Dog Training
Teaching your dog to respond to the "Come" command is absolutely crucial for both of you. You have to realize that you must have this control for his well being and, because he most likely wants to be with you anyway, the "Come" command can be an easy one to teach. Because you have already developed a trusting relationship with your little guy, he is eager to please you.

5: Why Dog Nutrition Should Include a Pet Vitamin Supplement
What is it that you have every morning that gives you the energy to do what you want through out the day? The answer is simple, your vitamins. You have them to keep you active and resistant to ailments. Of course all these views are endorsed day in and day out by commercials and programs on television. And if you are a keen dog lover, you would naturally feel inclined to extend this healthy habit to your pets too.

Training Tips

Dog behavior training is certainly not an easy task. It takes patience and consistency. You have to learn how not to let communication differences become roadblocks. On the other hand, it is vital that you provide your new best friend with proper dog obedience training, so both of you can discover how to co-exist agreeably.
