When looking at the variety of dog beds, it's hard to know which one is the perfect fit for your dog. It would be horrible to put a lot of money into a bed only to find out your dog prefers to nap elsewhere. We will take a step by step look at the various dog beds so you can see what kind of benefits they might offer your canine companion.

The first thing to consider is size. You don't want to get one of the smaller dog beds for your puppy, especially if it's a large breed. You don't want your dog to quickly outgrow its new bed, so be sure to factor in growth before purchasing a new sleeping space for your puppy.

If you're looking for an adult canine, then it is important you allow them enough room to stretch. Getting a dog bed that is a snug fit may cause your dog discomfort. There are also some higher dog beds, and it's important you consider the animal's ability to get onto it comfortably. If you do have a larger dog, these off the ground beds can be perfect to keep them warm and cozy.

Second, shape. Dog beds come in different shapes: rectangular, circular, oval, squaresome are even oddly shaped or made to look like miniature sofas or beds. Some are simply flat mattresses, while others have raised headrests or pillows attached. You want to select the shape that best fits your dog.

To help decide which shape to buy, study your dog and how it sleeps. If your dog enjoys stretching out, a long, large bed might be your best bet. If your dog likes to curl up in a little ball to sleep, it might like a round bed better. Here again, take into account your dog's age. If you're buying for a puppy, be sure to get a larger bed to give it some growing room.

Third, material. Once you've got the size and shape decided on, you want to find a bed that will be easy for you to clean. All dogs bring in mud and dirt occasionally, not to mention some fleas and other insects. Check the dog beds for materials that can be washed and stand up to as much wear and tear as possible.

You should also be sure to check the sturdiness of the item. A few of the dog beds have wood bases, and while they can cost a little more, they may also last longer than a fabric one. It's a good idea to check the stuffing covering the frame to make sure that it is thick enough to keep the bed from being rough.

Fourth, special needs. If you have a dog that suffers from a disease or injury, you may need to get it a special type of bed. There are dog beds out there that help support dogs with arthritis or dogs with hurt legs. If you have an older dog or one with an injury, it may be worth spending a bit more to make sure they're comfortable.

Fifth, color and design. While it's not going to affect your dog in any way, you may want to purchase a dog bed that will go with the rest of your dcor or color scheme. It's not a huge factor, but it's one that some people take into consideration when selecting from the many dog beds.

This is not the end for the options that are available for dog beds; there are some that are heated or waterproof. Others can even be custom ordered with designs sewn into the cloth. Before you head out to make this purchase, write down every consideration you have for your furry friend's bed. This will help you narrow down the choices once you go to buy the bed.
